Un fama tenía un reloj de pared y todas las semanas le daba cuerda CON GRAN CUIDADO. Pasó un cronopio y al verlo se puso a reír, fue a su casa e inventó el reloj-alcachofa o alcaucil, que de una y otra manera puede y debe decirse.
El reloj alcaucil de este cronopio es un alcaucil de la gran especie, sujeto por el tallo a un agujero de la pared. Las innumerables hojas del alcaucil marcan la hora presente y además todas las horas, de modo que el cronopio no hace más que sacarle una hoja y ya sabe una hora. Como las va sacando de izquierda a derecha, siempre la hoja da la hora justa, y cada día el cronopio empieza a sacar una nueva vuelta de hojas. Al llegar al corazón el tiempo no puede ya medirse, y en la infinita rosa violeta del centro el cronopio encuentra un gran contento, entonces se la come con aceite, vinagre y sal, y pone otro reloj en el agujero.

CLOCKS
A fama had a wall clock and every week he took great care winding it up. As a cronopio was passing by he laughted at this view, went home and invented the artichoke-clock or alcaucil that can be named in both ways.
The artichoke-clock from this cronopio belongs to a great species, held from its stem to a hole in the wall. Its innumerable leaves appoint the current hour besides all hours, so that the cronopio takes a leaf out and knows the time. As he takes them out from left to right, the leaf always give the precise hour, and every day the cronopio starts a new round of leaves. At the very heart time cannot me measured anymore, so in the infinite purplish core the cronopio finds a great joy, then it can be eaten with oil, vinegar and salt, and put another clock in the hole.

DUVAR SAATLERİ
Bir Famanın duvar saati vardı ve her sabah onu ÖZENLE kurardı. Bunu gören Cronopio gülmeye başladı, evine dönüp enginar-saati ya da synara icat etti- her iki türlü de söylenebilir.
Cronopionun enginar-saati, duvarda bir deliğe sapından tutturulmuş çok iri cins bir enginardır. Enginarın sayısız yaprağı hem şimdiki saati, hem de aynı zamanda bütün saatleri gösterir, öyle ki saatin kaç olduğunu öğrenmesi için Cronopionun yapraklardan birini koparması yeterli olur. Soldan sağa doğru koparıldığından, yaprak hep doğru zamanı gösterir ve her gün yeni bir yaprak dizisini koparır. Tam ortasına geldiğinde zamanı ölçmek artık olanaksızdır ve merkezdeki sonsuz mor gülde uçsuz bir mutluluğu keşfeder Cronopio. Daha sonra onu sirkeli sosla yer ve deliğe başka bir saat yerleştirir.
