Gacela Del Amor Desesperado / Federico García Lorca

The night does not want to come
So that you do not come
Nor can I go.

But I will go
Though a sun-of-scorpions might eat my temple.
But you will come
With the tongue burned by the salt of rain.

The day does not want to come
So that you do not come
Nor can I go.

But I will go
Giving to the toads my bitten carnation.
But you will come
By the murky sewers of dark.

Neither the night, nor the day want to come,
So for you I die
And you die for me.

Federico García Lorca

GACELA OF DESPERATE LOVE

The night does not wish to come
so that you cannot come
and I cannot go.

But I will go
though a scorpion sun should eat my temple.

But you will come
with your tongue burned by the salt rain.

The day does not wish to come
so that you cannot come
and I cannot go.

But I will go
yielding to the toads my chewed carnation.

But you will come
through the muddy sewers of darkness.

Neither night nor day wishes to come
so that I may die for you
and you die for me.

GAZZELLA DELL'AMORE DISPERATO

e tu per me.

Gelmek istemiyor gece
Ne sen gelebiliyorsun o yüzden
Ne de ben gidebiliyorum.

Ama ben gideceğim
Akrepten bir güneş şakağımı yesede.
Ama sen geleceksin
Dilin tuzlu yağmurlarca yakılmış.

Gelmek istemiyor gün
Ne sen gelebiliyorsun o yüzden
Ne de ben gidebiliyorum.

Ama ben gideceğim.
Kurbağalara atarak ağzımda çiğnediğim karanfili.
Ama sen geleceksin
Çamurlu lağımından karanlığın.

Gelmek istemiyor, ne gün, ne gece
Ölebiliriz o yüzden
Ben senin uğruna
Sen de benim.

Mit zeitroten Lippen / Paul Celan

Mit zeitroten Lippen

Im Meer gereift ist der Mund,
dessen Worte der Abend hier nachspricht
im Angesicht seiner Länder.
Murmelnd spricht er sie nach,
mit zeitroten Lippen.

Mund, gezeitigt vom Meer,
vom Meer, wo der Thun schwamm
im Glanze,
der menschenher strahlt.

Silber des Thuns, den der Strahl traf,
Spiegelsilber des Thuns:
aufscheint den Augen
die zweite, die wandernde Glorie
der Stirnen.

Silber und Silber.
Doppelsilber der Tiefe.

Rudre die Kähne dorthin,
Bruder.
Wirf deine Netze danach,
Bruder.

Zieh es herauf,
wirf es uns in die Häuser,
wirf est uns auf die Tische,
wirft es uns auf die Teller -

Sieh, unsre Lippen schwellen,
zeitrot auch sie wie der Abend,
murmelnd auch sie -
und der Mund aus dem Meer
taucht schon empor
zum unendlichen Kusse.

Paul Celan

WITH TIME-RED LIPS

Matured in the sea is the mouth
whose words the evening here mimics
in the face of its lands.
Murmuring it repeats them
with time-red lips.

Mouth seasoned by sea,
by the sea where the Thun swam
in brilliance
that radiates mankindward.

Thun hit by the ray, Thunsilver,
mirror-silver of Thun:
The second, the wandering glory
of temples
illumines the eye.

Silver and silver.
Double-silver of depth.

Row the boats out there,
brother.
Throw your nets for it,
brother.

Pull it up,
throw it into our houses,
throw it on our tables,
throw it in our dishes.

See, our lips are swelling:
Time-red they too like the evening,
murmuring they too –
and the mouth from the sea
emerges
for the infinite kiss.

Paul Celan

Plata y plata.
Plata doble del fondo.

Rema la barca hacia allí,
hermano.
Tiende tras ella tus redes,
hermano.

Sácala aquí arriba,
échanosla a las casas.
échanosla a las mesas,
échanosla a los platos -

Mira, nuestros labios se hinchan,
color rojo tiempo también como la tarde,
murmurando también ellos -
y la boca desde el mar
emerge ya
para el beso infinito.

Paul Celan

CON LABBRA ROSSE DI TEMPO

Nel mare è maturata la bocca
le cui parole qui la sera ridice
al cospetto dei suoi paesi.
Mormorando essa le ridice
con labbra rosse di tempo.

Bocca, che evocarono le maree,
nel mare in cui nuotava il tonno,
nello splendore
che irraggia dagli uomini.

Argento del tonno toccato dal raggio,
argento specchiante del tonno:
improvvisa agli occhi riluce
la seconda, la migrante
aureola
delle fronti.

Argento ed argento.
Doppio argento del profondo.

Rema con la barca fin laggiù,
fratello.
Lancia le tue reti,
fratello.

Tiralo su,
gettalo nelle nostre case,
gettalo sulle nostre tavole,
gettalo sui nostri piatti -

Paul Celan

ZAMAN KIRMIZISI DUDAKLARLA

Denizlerde olgunlaştı bu ağız,
o ki, sözcüklerini akşam, şimdi ve burada,
kendi ülkelerine bakarken,
mırıldanarak tekrar etmekte,
zaman kırmızısı dudaklarla.

O ağız ki, denizden yaratılmış, orkinosların,
insan varolduğundan bu yana göz kamaştıran
parıltılarla yüzdükleri denizden gelme.

Işığa hedef olan orkinosun gümüş rengi,
bir ayna gümüşü:
Gözlere çarpan ise,
alınlardan yansıyan,
bir başka ve gezginci zafer,

Gümüş ve yine gümüş.
Derinliklerin katmerli görkemi

Götür sandalları oraya,
kardeşim,
ve fırlat
ağlarını.

Çek sonra,
evlerimize,
masalarımıza,
tabaklarımıza at -

Ich weilt als ein Nachtwind im käuflichen Schoß deiner Schwester;

Yo, viento nocturno, demoraba en el seno venal de tu hermana;

Paul Celan

Traducción de José Luis Reina Palazón

"The suns of deep sleep are bluer: only once were your locks like this:
I lingered as a night wind in the venal lap of your sister;
your hair hung above us in the tree, yet you weren't there.
We were the world, and you were a shrub before the gates."

Paul Celan

The Curve Of Your Eyes

The curve of your eyes embraces my heart
A ring of sweetness and dance
halo of time, sure nocturnal cradle,
And if I no longer know all I have lived through
It’s that your eyes have not always been mine.

Leaves of day and moss of dew,
Reeds of breeze, smiles perfumed,
Wings covering the world of light,
Boats charged with sky and sea,
Hunters of sound and sources of colour

Perfume enclosed by a covey of dawns
that beds forever on the straw of stars,
As the day depends on innocence
The whole world depends on your pure eyes
And all my blood flows under their sight.

Paul Éluard / Capital of Pain, 1926

Translated by A. S. Kline

Gözlerinin her zaman görmediğindendir beni.

Yaprakları günün ve pembe şarabın köpüğü,
Rüzgârın sazları, kokulu gülücükler
Işık dünyasını saran kanatlar,
Gökyüzü ve deniz yüklü gemiler,
Gürültü avcıları ve renk kaynakları.

Tanların kuluçka yatağından doğan kokular
Yıldızların samanı üzerinde yatan
Saflığa bağımlı gün gibi tıpkı
Dünya da bağımlıdır senin tertemiz gözlerine
Ve akar bütün kanım bakışlarında senin.

Ángela Adónica / Pablo Neruda

ÁNGELA ADÓNICA

Hoy me he tendido junto a una joven pura

grandes y claros.

Un clima de oro maduraba apenas
las diurnas longitudes de su cuerpo
llenándolo de frutas extendidas
y oculto fuego.

Pablo Neruda

Residencia en la tierra I (1925-1932)

ADONIC ANGELA

Today I stretched out next to a pure young woman
as if at the shore of a white ocean,
as if at the center of a burning star
of slow space.

From her lengthily green gaze
the light fell like dry water,
in transparant and deep circles
of fresh force.

Her bosom like a two flamed fire
burned raised in two regions,
and in a double river reached
her large, clear feet.

A climate of gold scarcely ripened
the diurnal length of her body
filling it with extended fruit
sand hidden fire.

in trasparenti e profondi cerchi

grandi e chiari.

Un clima d'oro maturava appena
le diurne longitudini del suo corpo
empiendolo di frutti distesi
e di occulto fuoco

ANGELA ADONICA

Aujourd’hui je me suis couché près d’une jeune pure
comme au bord d’un océan blanc,
comme au centre d’une étoile ardente
d’espace lent.

Un climat d’or mûrissait à peine

Pablo Neruda

(Canto General / América, no invoco tu nombre en vano: Poema nº XVII)

A RIVER

I want to go along the Papaloapán
as on the earthy mirror so many times,
touching my fingers to the potent water:
I want to go to the matrix, to the original
frame of its crystal branchwork:
to go, to wet my face, to plunge in the secret
tumult of the dew
my skin my thirst my dream.
The shad shooting from the water
like a silver fiddle,
and redolent flowers on the bank,
and immobile wings
in a zone of heat defended
by blades of blue.

Pablo Neruda

(Canto General / Sixth Canto. America, I Do Not Invoke Your Name in Vain)

(Translating Neruda: The Way to Macchu Picchu / Writer by John Felstiner)

BİR IRMAK

Topraksı aynanın defalarca yaptığı gibi
sürüklenmek istiyorum Papaloapán’da,
dokunmak istiyorum güçlü suyuna tırnaklarımla:
sürüklenmek istiyorum kaynaklar arasından,
kristalin özgün dal örgüsü arasından:
alnımı ıslatmak için, daldırmak için tenimi, susuzluğu,
ve düş eklemek için
şebnemin saklı şaşkınlığına.
Ringanın sudan sıçrayışı
gümüş bir keman gibi,
ve kıyıda atmosferik çiçekler
ve kımıltısız kanatlar
mavi kılıçların savunduğu
bölgenin sıcağında.

Amy Lowell - (Apples of Hesperides)

APPLES OF HESPERIDES

Glinting golden through the trees,
Apples of Hesperides!
Through the moonpierced warp of night
Shoot pale shafts of yellow light,
Swaying to the kissing breeze
Swings the treasure, goldengleaming,
Apples of Hesperides!.

Far and lofty yet they glimmer,
Apples of Hesperides!
Blinded by their radiant shimmer,
Pushing forward just for these;
Dewbesprinkled, bramblemarred,
Poor duped mortal, travelscarred,
Always thinking soon to seize
And possess the goldenglistening
Apples of Hesperides!.

Orbed, and glittering, and pendent,
Apples of Hesperides!
Not one missing, still transcendent,
Clustering like a swarm of bees.
Yielding to no man's desire,
Glowing with a saffron fire,
Splendid, unassailed, the golden
Apples of Hesperides!.

Amy Lowell

MELE DELLE ESPERIDI

Oro scintillante tra gli alberi,
Mele delle Esperidi!
Attraverso l'ordito notturno della luna trafitta
lanciate pallidi dardi di luce gialla,
tentennando alla brezza che sfiora
dondola il tesoro, l'oro luccicante,
Mele delle Esperidi.

Da lontano e dall'alto ancora baluginano
Mele delle Esperidi!
Accecati dal loro radioso luccicare
protendendosi in avanti per loro,
dalla rugiada bagnate, dai rovi rovinate,
povero mortale ingannato, dal viaggio segnato,
sempre pensando di acchiappare velocemente
e di possedere le luccicanti e dorate
Mele delle Esperidi!

Tonde, rilucenti, pendenti,
Mele delle Esperidi!
Nessuna mancante, ancora trascendenti,
raggruppate come uno sciame d'api.
Inflessibili dinanzi a qualsiasi umano desiderio,
ardenti con fiamma color zafferano,
splendide, inespugnabili, dorate,
Mele delle Esperidi!

Amy Lowell

HESPERİDES'İN ELMALARI

Altın gibi ışıldar ağaçların arasından,
Hesperides’in elmaları!
Ayla delinmiş gece kavisi arasından
Sarı ışığın solgun temrenlerini fırlatırlar,
Buse dolu melteme yönelip
Sallarlar defineyi, altın parıltılı
Hesperides’in elmaları!

Uzak ve ulaşılmaz olsalar da parıldar
Hesperides’in elmaları!
Yalnızca neşe saçan
Dürtükleyen ışığıyla körleşmiş,
Şebnemle örtülmüş, böğürtlenle boyanmış,
Zavallı safdil ölümlü, yolculuktan ürkmüş,
Altın pırıltısına yakında ulaşmayı
Ve sahip olmayı hep düşünür
Hesperides’in elmaları!

Kuşatılmış, ve pırıltılı, ve asılı,
Hesperides’in elmaları!
Hepsi tastamam, doğa üstü yine de,
Arı sürüsü gibi kümelenmiş.
Teslim olmamış hiçbir erkeğin arzusuna,
Safran ateşiyle tutuşmuş,
Şahane, saldırılmamış, altın
Elmaları Heseperides’in.

The Snow Man / Wallace Stevens

THE SNOW MAN

One must have a mind of winter
To regard the frost and the boughs
Of the pine-trees crusted with snow;

And have been cold a long time
To behold the junipers shagged with ice,
The spruces rough in the distant glitter

Of the January sun; and not to think
Of any misery in the sound of the wind,
In the sound of a few leaves,

Which is the sound of the land
Full of the same wind
That is blowing in the same bare place

For the listener, who listens in the snow,
And, nothing himself, beholds
Nothing that is not there and the nothing that is.

Wallace Stevens

EL HOMBRE DE NIEVE

Hace falta una mente de invierno
para contemplar la escarcha y las ramas
de los pinos con corteza de nieve;

Wallace Stevens

Versión de Ramón Buenaventura

BONHOMME DE NEIGE

Il faut posséder un esprit d’hiver
Pour regarder le gel et les branches
Des pins sous leur croûte de neige ;

Avoir eu froid pendant longtemps

Wallace Stevens

IL PUPAZZO DI NEVE

Bisogna avere una mente di inverno
Per ammirare il gelo e i rami
Dei pini incrostati di neve;

E aver avuto freddo a lungo
Per osservare i ginepri arruffati di ghiaccio,
Gli abeti ispidi al luccichio distante

Del sole in gennaio; e non trovare
Sofferente il suono del vento,
Il suono di poche foglie,

Che è il suono della terra
Piena dello stesso vento

Wallace Stevens

KARDAN ADAM

Çam dallarındaki kar kabuğuna
Ve kırağıya bakmak için
Kıştan bir zihin gerekir;

Ve üşümüş olmalı haylidir, görmek için
Ardıçların buzla aşna fişne olduklarını.
Ocak güneşinin ırak pırıltısında

Zımparalar ladinler; ve düşünmemek
Rüzgârın sesindeki acıyı. Toprağın sesidir
Bir avuç yaprağın sesi; aynı rüzgârla doludur.

Karda kulak veren biri için eser aynı çıplak yerde,
Ve bir hiç olan kendisi ayrımsayamaz
Orada olmayan ve olan herhangi bir şeyi.

Never Did I See Such Loves Nor Such Separations / İlhan Berk

Never Did I See Such Loves Nor Such Separations

Whenever I think of you
A gazelle goes down to drink water
And I see the meadows expanding

With you each evening
One green olive
And a piece of the blue sea
Take me along

Each time I dream of you
I plant roses where my hand touches
I give water to the horses
And I love the mountains even more

NEITHER DID I SEE SUCH LOVES NOR SUCH PARTINGS

Each time I think of you
A gazelle jumps down, drinking
Water among the reeds.

Each evening a green olive
And a piece of sky take me
Boldly to your arms.

Each time I think of you
Roses grow at my fingers,
I give water to horses,
Loving the mountain more.

NE BÖYLE SEVDALAR GÖRDÜM NE BÖYLE AYRILIKLAR

Ne zaman seni düşünsem
Bir ceylan su içmeye iner
Çayırları büyürken görürüm

Her akşam seninle

"You will not, in my last hour, find me surrounded by priests. I want to die lulled by the waves of the stormy sea, or standing on a mountain-top…my eyes looking upwards, no: I know my extinction will be complete. Besides, I would have no hope of mercy."

Comte de Lautréamont ~ (The Songs of Maldoror)

Además, no puedo esperar gracia alguna."

Allein / Hermann Hesse

ALLEIN

Es führen über die Erde
Strassen und Wege viel,
Aber alle haben
Dasselbe Ziel.

Du kannst reiten und fahren
Zu zwein und zu drein,
Den letzten Schritt
Mußt du gehen allein.

Drum ist kein Wissen
Noch Können so gut,
Als daß man alles Schwere
Alleine tut.

Hermann Hesse

ALONE

Across the Earth are leading
many a road and bend,
yet all are speeding
to the selfsame end.

Be you riding or driving
as twosome or three,
the last of your steps
belongs but to thee.

For skill's not as valid,
nor all that is known,
as tackling the difficult
stuff by your own.

Hermann Hesse

Translated from German by Walter Aue

ALONE

There lead over the earth
Streets and ways many,
But all have
The same goal.

You can ride and travel
By two and by three,
(But) the last step
You must go alone.

So there is no knowledge
Nor skill / ability so good,
But that one everything difficult
(must) alone do.

Hermann Hesse

YALNIZ

Yeryüzünde birçok
Yol ve sokak vardır,
Fakat hepsinin
Varacağı yer aynıdır.

Gezip dolaşırken türlü şekilde
İki ya da üç kişi olursun;

Albert Camus - (La Mort heureuse)

"The cats sleep for days at a time and make love from the first star until dawn. Their pleasures are fierce, and their sleep impenetrable. And they know that the body has a soul in which the soul has no part."

Albert Camus - (Happy Death)

"I gatti dormono giorni interi e amano dalla prima stella fino all'alba.

Albert Camus - (La morte felice)

Albert Camus - (La Muerte Feliz)

Albert Camus - (La Mort heureuse)

"Believe me there is no such thing as great suffering, great regret, great memory... Everything is forgotten, even a great love. That's what's sad about life, and also what's wonderful about it. There is only a way of looking at things, a way that comes to you every once in a while. That's why it's good to have had love in your life after all, to have had an unhappy passion- it gives you an alibi for the vague despairs we all suffer from."

Albert Camus - (Happy Death)

Albert Camus - (La muerte feliz)

"İnan bana, büyük acı yoktur, büyük pişmanlıklar, büyük anılar yoktur. Her şey unutulur, büyük aşklar bile.

Lovers Embrace, by David Ridley

Albert Camus - (Le premier homme)

"It is in the sense that our moments of happiness are sometimes those when the feeling that we are abandoned inflates us and lifts us into an endless sadness. In the sense also that happiness often is no more than self-pity for our unhappiness."

Albert Camus - (The First Man)

Albert Camus - (El primer hombre)

Albert Camus - (Le premier homme)

"When I was young, I asked more of people than they could give: everlasting friendship, endless feeling. Now I know to ask less of them than they can give: a straightforward companionship. And their feelings, their friendship, their generous actions seem in my eyes to be wholly miraculous: a consequence of grace alone."

Albert Camus - (The First Man)

Albert Camus - (El primer hombre)

Three Women / Sylvia Plath

SECOND VOICE:

There is the moon in the high window. It is over.
How winter fills my soul! And that chalk light
Laying its scales on the windows, the windows of empty offices,
Empty schoolrooms, empty churches. O so much emptiness!
There is this cessation. This terrible cessation of everything.
These bodies mounded around me now, these polar sleepers--
What blue, moony ray ices their dreams?

I feel it enter me, cold, alien, like an instrument.
And that mad, hard face at the end of it, that O-mouth
Open in its gape of perpetual grieving.
It is she that drags the blood-black sea around
Month after month, with its voices of failure.
I am helpless as the sea at the end of her string.
I am restless. Restless and useless. I, too, create corpses.

I shall move north. I shall move into a long blackness.
I see myself as a shadow, neither man nor woman,
Neither a woman, happy to be like a man, nor a man
Blunt and flat enough to feel no lack. I feel a lack.
I hold my fingers up, ten white pickets.
See, the darkness is leaking from the cracks.
I cannot contain it. I cannot contain my life.

I shall be a heroine of the peripheral.
I shall not be accused by isolate buttons,
Holes in the heels of socks, the white mute faces
Of unanswered letters, coffined in a letter case.
I shall not be accused, I shall not be accused.
The clock shall not find me wanting, nor these stars
That rivet in place abyss after abyss.

Sylvia Plath - (Three Women)

SEGUNDA VOZ:

Por la ventana se ve la luna. Alta.

Me siento intranquila.

No puedo contenerla. No puedo contener mi vida.

No seré acusada, no seré acusada.

Parmaklarımı kaldırırım, on beyaz mertek.

Discurso Octavio Paz, Premio Cervantes (1981) / Octavio Paz

Discurso Octavio Paz, Premio Cervantes (1981)

"Freedom is not a general system of explaining the universe and mankind. Neither is it a philosophy: it is an act both irrevocable and instantaneous, which consists of selecting one possibility among many. There is no general theory of freedom, nor can there be, since freedom is an affirmation of what each one of us is unique and personal, something that cannot be reduced to any generalization. Better said, each of us is a singular and unique creature, with the result that freedom becomes tyranny as soon as we try to impose it upon others. Without freedom democracy is despotism; without democracy freedom is a chimera."

Octavio Paz speech for the Cervantes Award (1981)

From Art to Politics: Octavio Paz and the Pursuit of Freedom

Writer: Yvon Grenier

THE SILENCE

Listen, my son: the silence.
It's a rolling silence,
a silence
where valleys and echoes slip,
and it bends foreheads
down towards the ground.

Federico García Lorca

ISSIZLIK

Dinle çocuğum ıssızlığı.
Dalgalanan ıssızlığı,
vadilerin kaydığı ıssızlığı,
yankıların olduğu ıssızlığı,
alınları toprağa eğilten ıssızlığı.

Un Ciego / Jorge Luis Borges

UN CIEGO

No sé cuál es la cara que me mira
cuando miro la cara del espejo;

me alcanza. He vislumbrado tu cabello
que es de ceniza o es aún de oro.

Repito que he perdido solamente

Jorge Luis Borges - (La rosa profunda, 1975)

A BLIND MAN

I do not know what face looks back at me
When I look at the mirrored face, nor know
What aged man conspires in the glow
Of the glass, silent and with tired fury.

Slow in my shadow, with my hand I explore
My invisible features. A sparkling ray
Reaches me. Glimmers of your hair are gray
And some are even gold. I’ve lost no more

Than just the useless surfaces of things.
This consolation is of great import,
A comfort had by Milton. I resort

To letters and the rose––my wonderings.
I think if I could see my face I’d soon
Know who I am on this fare afternoon.

Jorge Luis Borges - (The Deep Rose, 1975)

Translated by Willis Barnstone

UN AVEUGLE

Je ne sais quel visage me considère
quand je regarde le visage de la glace;

Jorge Luis Borges - (La Rose profonde, 1975)

Quando guardo la faccia dello specchio;
Non so che vecchio guati nel riflesso
Con silenziosa ed ormai stanca ira.

Lento nell'ombra con la mano esploro
Il mio volto invisibile. Un baleno
Mi sorprende. Ho intravisto i tuoi capelli

Jorge Luis Borges - (La rosa profonda, 1975)

BİR KÖR

Ne zaman aynadaki yüze baksam,
Bilmiyorum hangi yüz bana bakıyor;

Dissipa Tu Se Lo Vuoi / Eugenio Montale

Dissipa Tu Se Lo Vuoi

giurano fede queste mie parole
a un evento impossibile, e lo ignorano.
Ma sempre che tradii
la tua dolce risacca su le prode
sbigottimento mi prese
quale d’uno scemato di memoria
quando si risovviene del suo paese.
Presa la mia lezione
più che dalla tua gloria
aperta, dall’ansare
che quasi non dà suono
di qualche tuo meriggio desolato,
a te mi rendo in umiltà. Non sono
che favilla d’un tirso. Bene lo so: bruciare,
questo, non altro, è il mio significato.

Eugenio Montale - (Ossi di seppia)

Dissolve It, If You Wish

This little crying life -
dissolve it, if you wish,
as a sponge from a blackboard
wipes an ephemeral scrawl.
My own foundering voyage done,
I wait to return within your circuiting,
My very coming was testimony
to an order which in travelling I had forgotten,
these very words of mine have pledged a blind faith
to a consummation which is not to be.
But whenever I have faintly heard
the soft pulsations of your surf
consternation has seized hold of me
as when memory blurs for a man
trying to recall the landscape of his youth.
Much from your savage exultation
I have learned my wisdom, and much more
from that still flame
which burns and makes no sound,
your long and desolate and noonday trance.
Humbly I give myself to you. A spark
for the great burning. This burning, well I know,
and this alone, is my significance.

Eugenio Montale - (Cuttlefish Bones)

Translated by Maurice English

a ti me rindo humildemente.

N'olur Silip Yok Ediver

N'olur silip yok ediver
bu sızıldanan yaşamı,
siler gibi sünger ömürsüz
çizgiyi taştahtadan.
Kavuşmayı bekliyorum çemberine,
sapkın yolum tamamlanıyor.

Tanıklığıydı gelişim,
bir buyruğun, unuttum yolculukta,
sözlerim ant içiyor doğrulukla
olanaksız bir olaya, bilmedikleri.
Ama her farkedişimde
çarpıp dönen dalganı kıyılarda
alıyor beni bir korku
belleği zayıflamış biri gibi
anımsadığında anayurdunu.

Aldım dersimi,
senin apaçık görkeminden
daha çok nerdeyse dilsiz
solumasından
ıssız öğlelerinden birinin,
işte senin oldum alçakgönüllüce. Bir
kozalak kıvılcımıyım. Biliyorum: yanmak;
budur işte, başka değil, anlamım.

Songs of the soul, by Ebru Sidar

Thomas Hood - (The Song of the Shirt)

THE SONG OF THE SHIRT

With fingers weary and worn,
With eyelids heavy and red,
A woman sat, in unwomanly rags,
Plying her needle and thread--
Stitch! stitch! stitch!
In poverty, hunger, and dirt,
And still with a voice of dolorous pitch
She sang the "Song of the Shirt."

"Work! work! work!
While the cock is crowing aloof!
And work — work — work,
Till the stars shine through the roof!
It's Oh! to be a slave
Along with the barbarous Turk,
Where woman has never a soul to save,
If this is Christian work!

(...)

"Oh, Men, with Sisters dear!
Oh, Men, with Mothers and Wives!
It is not linen you're wearing out,
But human creatures' lives!
Stitch — stitch — stitch,
In poverty, hunger, and dirt,
Sewing at once with a double thread,
A Shroud as well as a Shirt.

(...)

"Work — work — work!
My Labour never flags;
And what are its wages? A bed of straw,
A crust of bread — and rags.
That shatter'd roof — and this naked floor —
A table — a broken chair —
And a wall so blank, my shadow I thank
For sometimes falling there!

"¡Trabaja — trabaja — trabaja!
Mi esfuerzo nunca flaquea;

iğne iplik gider gelir, gider gelir, gider gelir,
dik babam dik, dik babam dik!
bir kadın, aç, yoksul, bir deri bir kemik,
gömleğin ezgisini çığırır,
gömleğin ezgisini, acı acı.

Dik babam dik, dik babam dik, dik babam dik!
uzaklardan horoz sesleri gelene dek!
dik babam dik, dik babam dik, dik babam dik!
yıldızlar damlardan sızana dek!
buysa eğer Hristiyanca çalışmak,
yoktur kadının bir ruhu kurtarılacak,
daha iyidir be, barbar Türke köle olmak!

(...)

Hey erkekler, erkekler,
sizinde sevgili bacılarınız var,
hey erkekler, erkekler,
anacıklarınız, karıcıklarınız var sizin de!
keten bezi değil bu eskittiğiniz, erkekler,
bu eskittiğiniz insanoğlunun hayatı be!
çift iplikle yaparım işimi ben,
aç yoksul, bir deri bir kemik,
bir anda hem gömlek dikerim, hem kefen!

(...)

Dik babam dik, dik babam dik, dik babam dik!
hiç eksilmez gücüm benim.
ama elime geçen ne?
bir ot yatak,
bir kabuk ekmek,
bir de şu paçavralar,
bir tavan delik deşik,
bir döşeme çırılçıplak,
bir masa, bir kırık sandalye,
ve bomboş bir duvar.
bereket gölgemi görürüm o duvarda arada bir.

Not:

"And it’s the awareness that nothing – (except sickness) can rob me of the strength that’s now beginning to develop, it’s that awareness that gives me faith in the future and enables me to bear many unpleasantnesses in the present. It’s a wonderful thing to look at something and find it beautiful, to reflect on it and hold it fast and then to say: I’m going to draw that, and then to work on it until it’s done.

Obviously that’s why I’m not yet content with my work to the extent that I think I needn’t do it any better. But the way to do it better later is to do it as well as one can today, there can’t be anything but progress tomorrow.

The enclosed drawing was scratched after a larger study(1) which has a more sombre expression. There’s a poem by Tom Hood, I believe, in which he tells of a great lady who can’t sleep at night because during the day, when she went out to buy a frock, she saw the poor seamstresses pale, consumptive, emaciated, working in an airless room. And now she has twinges of remorse about her wealth and wakes up at night in panic.(2) In short, it’s a slender, white female figure, restless in the dark night."

Vincent van Gogh - (The Letters. Vincent van Gogh to Theo van Gogh. The Hague, on or about Thursday, 6 April 1882.)

(1) This larger study of Nude woman, half-length (The great lady) is not known.

(2) Here Van Gogh combines the themes of two well-known poems of social protest by Thomas Hood, ‘The lady’s dream’ and ‘The song of the shirt’. ‘The lady’s dream’ comes immediately after ‘The song of the shirt’ in some editions of the poems. See Poems. 7th ed. London 1854, p. 49. Van Gogh’s notion of this woman differs from Hood’s idea of her; see Zemel 1987, p. 367 (n. 29): ‘Hood’s own illustration for ‘The lady’s dream’, titled The modern Belinda, shows an elaborately gowned lady holding a lapdog and attended by a peacock while surrounded by flying skeletal sylphs’. See also Zemel 1997, p. 28 and letter 176.

The Song of the Shirt

"With fingers weary and worn,
With eyelids heavy and red,
A woman sat, in unwomanly rags,
Plying her needle and thread--
Stitch! stitch! stitch!
In poverty, hunger, and dirt,
And still with a voice of dolorous pitch
She sang the "Song of the Shirt."

Thomas Hood - (The Song of the Shirt)

(1) Sözü geçen desen "The Great Lady" adlı desendir. "Sorrow" kadar ünlü olan bu desen o sıralarda Vincent’in eşi olan Christine'i model alarak çizilmiştir.. Bundan sonraki mektuplarda Van Gogh bu kadından Sien adıyla söz eder.

(2) Thomas Hood'a ait bir şiir:

"Bir kadın oturur paçavralar içinde,
kadınlıktan çıkmış bir kadın,
parmaklar nasırlı ve yorgun,
göz kapakları kızarık ve ağır,
iğne iplik gider gelir, gider gelir, gider gelir,
dik babam dik, dik babam dik!
bir kadın, aç, yoksul, bir deri bir kemik,
gömleğin ezgisini çığırır,
gömleğin ezgisini, acı acı."

Relámpago en reposo / Octavio Paz

RELÁMPAGO EN REPOSO

Tendida,
piedra hecha de mediodía,
ojos entrecerrados donde el blanco azulea,
entornada sonrisa.
Te incorporas a medias y sacudes tu melena de león.
Luego te tiendes,
delgada estría de lava en la roca,
rayo dormido.
Mientras duermes te acaricio y te pulo,
hacha esbelta,

Octavio Paz

LIGHTNING AT REST

Stretched out,
stone made of noon,
half-open eyes whose whiteness turns to blue,
half-ready smile.
Your body rouses, you shake your lion's mane.
Again lying down,
a fine striation of lava in the rock,
a sleeping ray of light.
And while you sleep I stoke you, polish you,
slim axe,
arrow with whom I set the night on fire.

The sea fighting far off with its swords and feathers.

Octavio Paz

DİNLENİŞTE ŞİMŞEK

Enginlik,
öğle taşı,
akı gök rengine çalan yarı açık gözler,
yarı kapalı gülüş.
Ayağa kalkar ve silkersin aslan yeleni.
Uzanırsın,
incecik lav damarı kayada,
yatışmış şimşek.
Uyuduğun sırada seni okşar,
parlatırım ben,
ince balta,

VALLEY OF MEXICO

The day unfolds its transparent body. Tied to the solar stone, the light pounds me with its great invisible hammers. I am only a pause between one vibration and the next: the living point, the sharp, quiet point fixed at the intersection of two glances that ignore each other and meet within me. Do they make a pact? I am pure space, the battleground. Through my body, I see my other body. The stones sparkles. The sun rips out my eyes. Two stars smooth their red feathers in my empty sockets. Splendor, spiral of wings, and a ferocious beak. And now my eyes sing. Peer into its song, throw yourself into the fire.

Eğil bak şarkısına, at kendini sen de o ateşe.
